The far-right president has previously said that the climate crisis is a ‘Socialist lie.’
On Wednesday, the Argentine delegation withdrew from the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) by order of far-right President Javier Milei.

The decision to leave the summit comes after the Argentine delegation had participated in the forum’s initial sessions. “It’s true. We have instructions from the Foreign Affairs Ministry to no longer participate. That’s all I can tell you,” Argentina’s Undersecretary for the Environment Ana Lamas said.
“Argentina’s far right leader Milei has previously said that the climate crisis is a ‘Socialist lie.’ He threatened to withdraw from the Paris agreement during the election campaign last year but has since backed down,” The Guardian recalled.
Since Monday, representatives from nearly every country have been attending the UN Climate Change Summit held in Baku, Azerbaijan. These meetings are held annually and are the only multilateral decision-making forum focused on climate change.
In brief, COP is where the world gathers to agree on the necessary measures to address the climate crisis, such as limiting the increase in global temperature to below 1.5 degrees Celsius, helping vulnerable communities adapt to the effects of climate change, and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
COP29 brings together representatives from member states of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It also involves business leaders, youth, scientists, Indigenous peoples, and others interested in sharing ideas to strengthen a collective and inclusive global climate action.
The primary priorities of COP29 include establishing a new climate finance target, ensuring that all countries have the necessary resources to adopt much stronger climate measures, drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and building resilient communities.
The focus also is on the upcoming round of National Climate Plans (NDCs), which countries are developing ahead of next year’s deadline. COP29 aims to ensure that these strategies and more ambitious, fully actionable, and investable targets cover the entire economy, focus on transitioning away from fossil fuels, and keep the world on track for 1.5 degrees of warming.
